Description
Write SQL queries that filter, calculate, group, join and rank data, then check AI-written SQL and produce a verified report.
About this course
This course covers querying in SQL from your first SELECT statement to window functions. You connect to a sample database, filter and calculate data, summarize it with aggregates and grouping, combine tables with joins, and break harder questions into subqueries and common table expressions. You then use AI to draft SQL, test every AI-written query against your own results before you trust it, and turn the verified queries into a short report.
Who it is for
This course is for business users, analysts and new technical staff who need to pull and summarize their own data. It also suits report writers who want to read and check the SQL that others or AI tools write.
Prerequisites
Basic computer skills and some familiarity with database terms such as table, row and column
No prior SQL experience is needed
Requirements
Works on Windows or Mac
SQL Server 2025 Developer or Express edition (free); on a Mac you run SQL Server in a Docker container or use a cloud database
SQL Server Management Studio 21 or later on Windows, or Visual Studio Code with the SQL extension on Windows or Mac
Access to a generative AI assistant your employer approves, for the AI-assisted querying module
What you will be able to do
- You will be able to write SELECT queries that filter rows with WHERE, BETWEEN, IN, LIKE and correct NULL handling.
- You will be able to calculate and format results with expressions, aliases, string and date functions and CAST.
- You will be able to summarize data with COUNT, SUM, AVG, MIN and MAX using GROUP BY and HAVING.
- You will be able to combine tables with inner, left and full joins and answer multi-step questions with subqueries and common table expressions.
- You will be able to rank rows and calculate running totals and period-over-period changes with window functions.
- You will be able to test AI-written SQL against known results, find its errors and correct them before using the output.
