Description
Build advanced DAX skills in Power BI: columns, measures, and tables, row and filter context, multi-table and time calculations, error handling, and testing in DAX Studio.
About this course
This course is entirely about DAX, the formula language behind Power BI calculations. You will learn when to use a calculated column, a measure, or a calculated table, and you will see row and filter context at work rather than just reading definitions. You will then write multi-table, iterator, and time-based calculations, handle errors cleanly, and use DAX Studio to test and speed up your measures.
Who it is for
This course suits data analysts, BI developers, and report owners whose reports need calculations beyond simple sums, and anyone who maintains measures written by someone else.
Prerequisites
A working star-schema model in Power BI and a few simple measures
Completion of WCCI's Data Model Design Using Power BI course, or equivalent experience, is recommended
Requirements
Requires a Windows PC
Power BI Desktop (free, Windows only)
DAX Studio (free third-party tool, Windows only); your IT team may need to approve the install
What you will be able to do
- You will be able to choose between a calculated column, a measure, and a calculated table for a given requirement and explain why.
- You will be able to predict how row context and filter context change a measure's result in a visual.
- You will be able to calculate across related tables using CALCULATE, RELATED, and RELATEDTABLE.
- You will be able to write iterator and table expressions with SUMX, FILTER, and ALL, and handle errors with DIVIDE, IFERROR, and BLANK.
- You will be able to build moving averages, period comparisons, and semi-additive balance measures.
- You will be able to time a slow measure in DAX Studio and Performance Analyzer and rewrite it to run faster.
