About this course

This course is about getting the data right before anyone builds a report. You will connect to several kinds of source, clean and reshape raw data in Power Query, and design a model with fact and dimension tables and a proper date table. You will finish by adding summary measures and a starter set of time intelligence so your reports can compare periods.

Who it is for

This course suits data analysts, reporting analysts, and finance or operations staff who prepare data for their own or other people's reports and spend too long fixing messy sources.

Prerequisites

You have built at least one simple Power BI report

Completion of WCCI's Data Analysis Using Power BI Desktop – Level 1 – Report Builder course, or equivalent experience, is recommended

Requirements

Requires a Windows PC

Power BI Desktop (free, Windows only)

Course data files and a sample database connection supplied by WCCI

What you will be able to do

  • You will be able to connect Power BI to Excel files, a folder of CSV files, a database, and a web table, using parameters where helpful.
  • You will be able to profile, clean, pivot, unpivot, merge, and append data in Power Query.
  • You will be able to design a model with fact and dimension tables and set the correct relationship cardinality and filter direction.
  • You will be able to add and mark a date table and tidy the model with hidden fields and sort-by columns.
  • You will be able to write summary measures with CALCULATE and add year-to-date and prior-year comparisons.

Syllabus

1

Connect to Diverse Sources 1 hour

Excel workbooks, Folder of CSV files, Database tables, Web tables, Parameters and credentials.

Lab: You will connect one report to four different sources and set a parameter that switches the source folder.
2

Clean and Transform in Power Query 1.5 hours

Column profiling, Data types and nulls, Pivot and unpivot, Merge and append.

Lab: You will clean a messy sales export and combine it with a second source into a single analysis-ready table.
3

Shape the Model 1.5 hours

Fact and dimension tables, Keys, Relationships, Cardinality and filter direction.

Lab: You will rebuild a flat table into a star schema and confirm the relationships filter correctly.
4

Date Table and Model Settings 1 hour

Building a date table, Mark as date table, Hiding fields, Sort-by columns.

Lab: You will add and mark a date table, then hide technical fields so the model is easy for report builders to use.
5

First DAX Measures 1 hour

Summary measures, CALCULATE, Filter context basics.

Lab: You will write a small set of summary measures and use CALCULATE to compare a filtered total with the overall total.
6

Time Intelligence Starter Set 1 hour

Year-to-date, Prior year, Time-aware report page.

Lab: You will add year-to-date and prior-year measures and build a report page that compares periods.
