Your capstone, reviewed by a coach

You finish by launching your app on a custom domain, and your coach reviews it with you against the launch checklist: DNS, HTTPS, secrets, monitoring and backups. That review is part of earning your certificate.

Group coaching for teams

Each learner gets 1 hour of coaching. Teams pool their hours into group sessions, so a team of 6 shares 6 hours of group coaching.

About this course

Building an app is half the job; putting it in front of real users safely is the other half. In this course you take an app from a GitHub repository to a live address on your own domain. You configure preview and production deployments, DNS and HTTPS, environment variables and secrets, a release path from a test branch to production, and the monitoring, alerts, usage limits and backups that keep it running.

Who it is for

This course is for developers, citizen developers, IT staff, and entrepreneurs and founders who need to deploy and operate web applications, including apps built with AI tools.

Prerequisites

Introduction to GitHub with AI, or working knowledge of GitHub pull requests

A web app in a GitHub repository (a reference app is provided)

Requirements

Any computer with a modern browser

Free accounts for GitHub, Vercel and Supabase for the course labs, and a free uptime monitoring service; apps your employer runs commercially need paid hosting plans (Vercel's free Hobby plan is for non-commercial use)

Labs use a public practice repository, since branch protection requires a paid plan for private repositories; do not put employer code in it. Teams on a paid GitHub plan can use a private repository.

A domain you own (a paid registration from a domain registrar) or a subdomain your employer already owns

What you will be able to do

  • You will be able to deploy a web application from GitHub to Vercel with preview deployments for every pull request and production deployments from the main branch.
  • You will be able to configure a custom domain with DNS records and HTTPS without disrupting existing email records.
  • You will be able to configure environment variables and secrets for preview and production, and rotate an exposed key.
  • You will be able to release through GitHub with a protected promotion from a test branch to production, and roll back a bad release.
  • You will be able to configure uptime and error monitoring and alerts, back up and restore a database, and check an app against its hosting plan's usage limits.

Syllabus

1

Hosting, DNS and HTTPS architecture 1 hour

Hosts and builds, Domains and DNS records, HTTPS certificates, Builder hosting compared with your own host.

Lab: You will map where each part of your app runs today and what must change to host it yourself.
2

Deploying from GitHub 1.5 hours

Connecting a repository to Vercel, Build settings, Preview deployments per pull request, Production from main.

Lab: You will deploy your app and get a preview link on a pull request before the change goes live.
3

Custom domains and DNS 1 hour

A, CNAME and TXT records, Subdomains, HTTPS, Protecting MX email records.

Lab: You will point a subdomain at your app with HTTPS working and existing email untouched.
4

Environment variables and secrets 1.5 hours

Environment variables, Preview and production settings, GitHub Actions secrets, Finding and rotating an exposed key.

Lab: You will move every key out of your code, then rotate one that was exposed on purpose.
5

Releasing through GitHub 1.5 hours

Test and main branches, Protected promotion pull requests, Tags and release notes, Required checks before deploy.

Lab: You will promote a change from a test branch to production through a protected pull request with release notes.
6

Monitoring, rollback and backups 1.5 hours

Uptime and error monitoring, Logs, Instant rollback, Database backups, Usage limits and spend alerts.

Lab: You will configure an uptime alert, back up your database, check your app against its plan's usage limits, ship a broken release, and roll it back.
7

Capstone 2 hours

Deployment, Domain and HTTPS, Secrets, Release path, Monitoring and backups.

Lab: You will launch your app against a written launch checklist and review it with your coach.
+

Coaching sessions 1 hour

Your coach reviews your capstone with you and answers questions as you work. Teams pool their hours into group sessions, so a team of 6 shares 6 hours of group coaching.

Frequently asked questions

How do I deploy a web app from GitHub?

Connect the repository to a host such as Vercel. Every pull request then gets a preview link, and every merge to the main branch deploys to production. This course sets that up step by step.

How do I connect a custom domain to Vercel?

Add the domain in Vercel, then create the DNS records it shows at your domain registrar. The course covers which records to add and how to avoid breaking your existing email.

How do I publish an app built with Lovable?

Lovable can publish and host the app itself, including on a custom domain with a paid plan, and AI-Assisted Web Application Development covers that. This course is for moving an app to your own hosting through GitHub and Vercel when you need control over releases, secrets, monitoring and backups.

What happens if a release breaks the app?

You roll back to the previous deployment in seconds. The course has you break a release on purpose and roll it back.

What does the coaching include?

Each learner gets 1 hour of coaching. Your coach reviews your capstone with you and answers questions as you work through the labs. Teams pool their hours into group sessions, so a team of 6 shares 6 hours of group coaching.

How long does it take and what does it cost?

10 course hours of on-demand video and labs plus 1 hour of coaching, for $1,000 per person.
