About this course

This course walks you through the four design domains of the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate exam, using the AWS Well-Architected Framework as the thread that ties them together. You will work in the AWS console to build and compare real architectures, from identity and network security to scaling, disaster recovery and cost control. Each module ends with exam-style scenario practice so you learn to choose the right AWS service for a stated business requirement.

Who it is for

This course is for solutions architects, cloud engineers, systems administrators and developers who design or support workloads on AWS. It also suits IT professionals with a strong on-premises background who are moving into cloud architecture roles.

Prerequisites

Familiarity with general networking, IP addressing and cloud computing concepts

AWS recommends at least 1 year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services

No formal prerequisite certification is required

Requirements

Works on Windows, macOS or Linux; labs use the AWS console in a web browser

An AWS account is required for hands-on labs; labs use free-tier services where possible, but some lab activity creates paid AWS usage charges billed to your account, so delete lab resources when you finish

Exam

AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03). This course prepares you for the SAA-C03 exam, and one exam attempt is included. The exam has 65 questions over 130 minutes and can be taken at a Pearson VUE test center or online with a proctor. Because AWS expects about a year of hands-on design experience, most learners need additional self-study, hands-on practice in AWS and practice exams beyond the course hours. Passing is not guaranteed.

What you will be able to do

  • You will be able to design access control for an AWS workload using IAM users, roles and policies across multiple accounts.
  • You will be able to build a VPC with public and private subnets, security groups and network ACLs that meets a stated security requirement.
  • You will be able to design a highly available, decoupled application using load balancing, Auto Scaling and managed queues.
  • You will be able to choose compute, storage and database services that meet given performance requirements, and explain the trade-offs.
  • You will be able to recommend cost-optimized options for a workload, such as purchasing models, storage tiers and right-sizing.
  • You will be able to answer scenario-based questions in the style of the SAA-C03 exam and explain why each wrong answer is wrong.

Syllabus

1

Orientation, AWS global infrastructure and the Well-Architected Framework 1.5 hours

Exam format and domain weights, Regions, Availability Zones and edge locations, Well-Architected Framework pillars, AWS console and account basics.

Lab: You will tour the AWS console, set up billing alerts and map a sample workload to the Well-Architected pillars.
2

Design secure architectures 5 hours

IAM users, roles and policies, Multi-account strategy, VPC security groups and network ACLs, Encryption and data protection, Securing application tiers.

Lab: You will build a secured VPC with least-privilege IAM roles and encrypted storage for a two-tier application.
3

Design resilient architectures 4.5 hours

Decoupling with queues and notifications, Load balancing and Auto Scaling, Multi-AZ high availability, Backup and disaster recovery strategies.

Lab: You will make a single-server application highly available across Availability Zones and test a simulated failure.
4

Design high-performing architectures 4 hours

Compute choices, Storage types and performance, Database selection, Caching, Network and content delivery options.

Lab: You will compare storage and database options for a sample workload and justify the configuration that meets its performance targets.
5

Design cost-optimized architectures 2 hours

Compute purchasing models, Storage tiers and lifecycle policies, Right-sizing, Cost monitoring tools.

Lab: You will review a sample architecture and produce a written cost-reduction plan that keeps it within its requirements.
6

Capstone and exam review 1 hour

End-to-end design scenario, Practice questions across all domains, Personal study plan.

Lab: You will design a complete architecture for a business case and complete a timed set of practice questions.
