Women in Technology: Mel McGee
The We Can Code IT team is proud to announce that founder Mel McGee is a 2014 recipient of the Crain’s Cleveland Business Women of Note Award.
The Crain’s Cleveland Business Women of Note issue landed on newsstands on July 13th. The Crain’s Cleveland website also features a profile and video interview with McGee and the other 13 recipients – all hard working, deserving women in Northeast Ohio.
McGee received the award for demonstrating excellence in business and a dedication to serving her community.
In the past year she has launched We Can Code IT and tech startup Rovar, an augmented reality platform she advanced through the exclusive Bizdom Accelerator Program in Cleveland. She has also grown imageNation Web Experts, her Cleveland web development and design agency, through her advanced skills in ACCTivate integrations, Magento eCommerce site development, and WordPress site development.
In the article, McGee is praised for making her way in the male-dominated world of technology, she admits to being a geek, and she challenges the notion that girls aren’t as adept at learning STEM subjects as boys. “It’s absolutely not because of any innate ability,” she says in the article.
She is also recognized for being a pioneer in wearable computing and augmented reality. “I’m interested in how we effectively interface with technology so it’s not intrusive but inclusive, just part of our lives,” she said. “We should not be a slave to technology. Technology should serve us.”
The Women of Note awards luncheon is on Thursday, July 24th from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at LaCentre in Westlake. Tickets can be purchased on the Crain’s Cleveland Women of Note site.
