Coding Bootcamp Through the Eyes of Jasmine, New to Programming
On March 9th 2015 I walked into a classroom full of new faces and sat down in the front row.
To say that I was nervous was an understatement. I had never done any type of computer programming in my 22 years of life. I was taking a plunge into the vast world of computer science and was afraid I might drown. Luckily, I attended We Can Code IT and had Mel McGee as my teacher.
The first day I could tell I wasn’t the only one who was worried, nor was I the only one who had no experience with computer programming. We started off using a program called “Scratch” where you can drag and drop statements to create games. We worked on these games for about 2 days with constant help from Mel and her teaching assistant Lauren. There were times I was frustrated, but I realized that this was a new concept that would take time to learn.
As the weeks went by I realized that what I was learning wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. Mel taught us different concepts everyday, but it wasn’t hard to follow. She was super determined to make sure that we all succeeded in everything that we did.
As the program was coming to an end I realized that I had learned more than I had ever imagined. Before coming to the boot camp I was told by a family member that I wouldn’t be able to finish because I wasn’t smart enough. When I told this to Mel she reassured me that I was smart and that she had noticed the potential I had.
All in all I would say that attending the We Can Code IT boot camp was the best decision of my life. I would encourage anybody who wants to learn computer programming to attend We Can Code IT and to let them know that Jasmine Gheith sent you!
