March 9, 2015 will mark a monumental day for Cleveland’s tech industry, as we kick off our first women-only coding bootcamp. The first women’s coding bootcamp class will be taking important steps, not just for the betterment of themselves, but for the state of diversity within the technology and engineering fields. The latest census data reports that women, African Americans, and Hispanic Americans are becoming an “endangered species” in computer science and engineering. Yet, the tech industry is a high-paying field with ample opportunities for employment, where women coders make approximately 28% more than their non-STEM counterparts.
Our 3-month immersive women-only coding bootcamp will provide women with a highly supported female-friendly learning environment. The learning objectives do not differ from the the learning objectives of the We Can Code IT coed bootcamp; So, whether a woman chooses the women-only or the coed bootcamp, she will leave the program prepared for her new career. However, the women-only bootcamp does offer seminars and places an emphasis on special topics that pertain specifically to women’s experiences within the industry, such as how to find a female-friendly company for employment.
