Cleveland and Columbus Coding Bootcamp Students Win Tech Competitions

As a leader in software development training, We Can Code IT not only teaches students how to code, we empower students by helping them build the confidence they need to succeed in the growing tech industry. One way our students are finding their paths as innovative software professionals is by getting involved in community tech competitions.

Most recently, We Can Code IT graduate Greg Moten Jr. and his team, won the “Most Commercially Viable” award at Kent Hack Enough. With over 325 participants, hackers at this event teamed up to create web applications and websites. Greg’s team, Hope 4 Ohio, created an app to assist opioid addicts and get them rapid clinical care.

Nationwide Hackathon Winner, Emmanuel Mugogo and team

Bootcamp alum, Emmanuel Mugogo’s team took 1st place at Nationwide’s hackathon in Columbus, OH. The competition had more than 300 innovative participants, 16 straight hours of hacking, and more than 60 teams building applications.

The team’s project, MonitorNow, was an application to monitor other applications across Nationwide to identify servers and client-side errors before they happen. They were judged on business value, innovation, technical completeness, and user experience.

Last spring, several We Can Code IT students participated in GiveBackHack Cleveland. At this weekend-long event, community members teamed up to create a technology-based solution to solve a social problem.

Team Afrofest, which included We Can Code IT grad Iris Hicks, took 1st place. As the winning team, they received $1,000 from CoverMyMeds, a branding workshop from Prosper for Purpose, and 1 year of desk space at StartMart.

GiveBackHack’s 2nd and 3rd place teams consisted of all We Can Code IT students:

  • Team Samaritans – Lindsey Lowe, Leslie Kornes, and Lily Krichels
  • Team Vet Alert – Chanel Williams, Ryan Sizer, and Jessica Cargill
